Note: information on the tunnel that we took to Whittier can be found here. At the time we drove through it, the tunnel was in operation for less than 3 weeks. Prior to that, you had to hop on a train to get to Whittier.
Also, here's a story about Whittier and the impact of the tunnel. It aired on July 17, 2000 on National Public Radio's ( NPR), All Things Considered news program. It requires a RealAudio player. and is about 3 1/2 minutes long.
We went to Whittier to take a 1 day glacier tour of Prince William Sound run by 26 Glacier Cruise. We were aboard a high-speed catamaran, the M/V Klondike Express. Our tour deviated from it's normal schedule in order to rescue 3 kayakers. Pieces of a glacier calved off into the ocean and caused waves which capsized their kayas.
