A 1/2" wide section of the heater hose s stuffed between the shock body and the threaded sleeve. I've read a some threads back on the Miata Forum site including this one and this one in which people have complained about clunking noises coming from heir coilover after their install.

The solution turned out to be putting some gasket or radiator hose strips between the shock body and the threaded sleeve. It didn't seem like this should be necessary since the threaded sleeve looks like it's very secure and shouldn't move and bang against the shock body, but you never know. Sticking in the heater hose now was such a simple thing to do, and if it prevents any possible noises in the future, then I'm all for it.
